"Christmas in the Summer" Dear Derrick & Laura O'
The Joint Music Release
From Brownsville Brooklyn, to the Upper East Side of Manhattan - Derrick B. Harden (A.K.A Couture Ink) and Laura O’Reilly (A.K.A Miz Metro) have joined forces as “Dear Derrick & Laura O’ “, the curating/music duo. The debut album “Christmas in the Summer” is an organic introduction to how they met, featuring their distinct individual sound released on one product. Together they aim to take music in a new direction with their self titled genre of “urban folk art music”, reflecting the art world they inhabit as curators for some of downtown NYC’s most cutting edge galleries. The music & packaging is their art and they will be releasing their joint product through an unseen gift wrapped art show in December at Cappellini's Los Angles location, part two of The Hole Pop-Up Exhibition.
The album is split between two sounds: Derrick’s gritty raps layered on top of J. Iden’s dark electronic hip hop beats and Laura stepping out as a producer with the use of a single Boss R.C 50 looping pedal and microphone. The entire album was engineered and mixed by J. Iden, recent graduate of NYU’s music technology program. The 12 tracks side by side could be described as a young Nas and Florence and the Machine sharing their earliest work on one album.
Derrick’s debut to the art world was screening his experimental hip hop art film “The Art of Nothing” (Hollywood Murder) at Lyon’s Weir Gallery, where he also curated his first show, Mint & Serf’s highly publicized debut Chelsea Show “S.G.U” (Special Graffiti Unit). Laura’s career as a curator began when she had the opportunity to cross-promote her first music single, “Trashion” through the medium of a recycled art show at Gallery 151, which received international acclaim. Before ever meeting, both Derrick & Laura were inspired to continue working within the art world to further bridge their musical and curatorial talents.
Their debut joint-release, “Christmas in the Summer” is a little bit raw and a lot experimental. Similar to the art show’s they have curated together such as the first ever WuTang brand art show, “Grassroot’s Through the WU-mb”, Melinda Hackett’s “Visual Labyrinths” featuring her new paintings as interactive computer programs by Michael Maulser, and now “Christmas in the Summer” the hidden art show/pre-order event art world release.
Dear Derrick & Laura O’s music and curation is a reflection of New York, itself from the Upper East Side to Brownsville, and they aim to capture the contrast and the dialogue of the city, whether it be race, sex, the high life, the underworld, art, music, and culture- from the bottom to the top. Currently they are a curating duo for The Hole Xmas Pop-Up and the associate directing duo for The Hole's 4,000 sq foot gallery space on Bowery.
